How I Started as a Musician
God has given me the talents of music and singing. It all started from when I was about 8-9 years old. When I was very small I could remember telling my mom I must own a band some day or even a singing group. I could remember she just smiled.
One day my mom brought a small acoustic guitar home from the market and said that a lady gave it to her. The fret board was broken and I just used some wood glue and put my bed foot on it for the night. It was not 100% but it was better than before. Then I started playing the guitar and I had no idea what to do or how to set it. And with no-one to show me I just did what pleased me and I just set it the way I wanted to set it. I would set the first four strings in a chord and then I would just use my first finger to hold in a fret and that would be a chord. Then I went to a concert one night and my brother was playing the guitar and I was real small. I was outside because the church was already full of people. Standing outside I could just hear him setting his guitar and I bored myself through the crowd and stood at the front door. He was on the platform and I could see him moving his fingers up and down on the fret board playing the scales do ray me fa so la ti do. Then he held a chord and what I noticed is that he did it differently from the way I did it. Then I sat down in a small seat that I could find and I practiced singing the chord with my mouth in my mind as I could remember him playing it. All of the music and the people in the church were so loud I was still practicing it to myself and to me, it was so quiet because I was concentrating so hard to get it right. To me, if I had dropped a pin, I could hear it. I wanted to get the chord so badly nothing else mattered to me, not even the rest of the chords my brother played. All I was fixed on was that first chord he played. It all started there, from the guitar to the bass, then the keyboard. Drums I have learned to play on my knees. That was several years ago and now I have started a gospel band. Although it is not 100% yet, with God’s help, we’re getting there.
I don’t have anyone teaching me. I have never had anyone teach me but God. God is my teacher and that is why He is helping me to build this band. Now God is helping me to play every other instrument once I get a hold of it. All it takes is a few weeks to understand about the instruments and then I can be fairly on my way.
It will take some time, but with God’s leading we will get there and when we do, you will all be a part of it. Thank you all for helping us in the way that God has blessed you to help us.
God Bless You!
